Anna Borodina is an opera director and dramaturge, based in Vienna, Austria.

Anna was born in 1987 in Western Siberia (Russia). After graduation from The Moscow State Lomonosov University (Department of Economics, BA summa cum laude) and New Economic School (MA in Economics) she turned to musical theatre.

She studied stage directing at Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow at the George Isaakyan’s workshop and later at MDW in Vienna under Beverly Blankenship. While studing she made internship under her stage directing teacher on Neuestudiobuehne MDW, took part in numerous masterclasses (e.g. Hartmut Schoerghofer, Cornel Franz, Franck Evin etc.), as well as worked in cooperation with other stage directors (i.e. scenes from “Carmen” by G. Bizet in team of 8 stage directors, January 2015, MDW). Moreover, she gained her further experience from Brigitte Fassbaender at the Bregenz Festival and worked as an assistant director to Arnaud Bernard at the Mariinsky Theatre St Petersburg.

Anna’s first own productions date back to her study years at MDW. It includes “People and Dolls: an aria cycle” (December 2015) consisting of arias from “Tancredi” (G. Rossini), “Pagliacci” (R. Leoncavallo) and “Oedipus Rex” (I. Stravinsky) and “Rita” by G. Donizetti (June 2016).

Since September 2017 she has been working as a stage director for opera projects at Opera in the Crypt (St Pete’s Church, Vienna). There she has staged two operas for children – “Bastien und Bastienne” by W. A. Mozart (September 2017) and “Abu Hassan” by C. M. von Weber (October 2017) – as well as “Lucia di Lammermoor” by G. Donizetti (May 2018).

Since June 2022 Anna has been working as a stage director for the opera summer festivals. She has staged “Le Nozze di Figaro” by W. A. Mozart and the contemporary opera “Mondo Novo” by P. Richards (July 2022) for the Vienna Summer Music Festival, as well as “Cosi fan tutte” by W. A. Mozart (July 2024) for the Vienna Opera Festival (Wiener Festspiele).

Alongside with opera, Anna is interested in operetta. In 2018 she started the collaboration with Wiener Operette Ensemble Oper@tee and staged “Die Fledermaus” by J. Strauss-son in the original Viennese version (Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt / KUMST Strasshof an der Nordbahn/ Opera in the Crypt Vienna, August 2018 – January 2024) ), “Der Vogelhändler” by C. Zeller (KUMST Strasshof an der Nordbahn, November 2021), “Der fliegende Rittmeister” by H. Dostal (KUMST Strasshof an der Nordbahn, October 2022), “Die Dollarprinzessin” by L. Fall (KUMST Strasshof an der Nordbahn, November 2023) as well as a romantic comic opera “Martha, or The Market at Richmond” by F. von Flotow (Opera in the Crypt, Vienna, February 2024).

In addition to stage productions, she directs and manages concerts with the extensive use of video. For that, she often works as a video director too. Staged projects include Anna Marshania’s Portrait concert of JET Theater an der Wien (i.e. the stage/ video concept for the works by F. Poulenc and B. Britten, Viennese chamber opera, June 2018) and “The Carnival of the animals” by C. Saint-Saens with the Children’s studio and the video animation at the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky theatre (January 2018) as the prize of the competition for the young opera directors in Mariinsky theatre that Anna won in autumn 2017.

In May, 2019 she took part in “Nano-opera”, the international competition for young opera directors (TV Kultura Channel / “Helikon-opera” theatre, Moscow, Russia).

Apart from theatre, she produces operatic feature films: short films “Charlotte” after “Werther” by J. Massenet and “Ein Zimmer mit Veilchen” (“A Room with Violets”) after “Adriana Lecouvreur” by F. Cilea are currently in post-production.

Upcoming projects include the revival of “Martha” by F. von Flotow (Ensemble Oper@tee, October 2024), “Die Fledermaus” by J. Strauss II (Ensemble Oper@tee, December / January 2025), “Der Vogelhändler” by C. Zeller (Ensemble Oper@tee, February / March 2025), as well as the staging of “Die Fledermausine”, an operetta parody on “Die Fledermaus” dedicated to the celebration of Strauss Year 2025 (Ensemble Oper@tee, November 2024).
